Ya. My D8 1 chip Sony is only a year or so old and it has mic in.
The choice seems to be pretty narrow, do any of the newer Digital 8 cameras offer microphone in?

Tonight I discovered that the 2004 Digital-8 models sold in the US will not have mic inputs. They will go down in price a hundred bucks from the 2003 models but not offer the mic inputs. So I purchased the 2003 model instead and I have the mic input.![]()
2003 models sold for $399, $499, $599. The $499 and $599 version have mike inputs, the $599 version has the 3 inch screen, the $499 model has the 2 1/2 inch screen. I think the model numbers in the US are 340, 350, 360.
The 2004 top of the line model (I think the model number is the TRV 460 will sell for $399 and have no mic input (is that possible?) and only offer the 2 & 1/2 inch screen. Looks like the TRV 360 was an economical but functional version with that larger color screen.

On a sidenote, I wonder if this is somehow related to the audio problems they had with the mic inputs when the first launched the PD-150, and more recently with the PD-170?

Gulp. Of course the one I bought last night was specially made just for me and won't have such problems.
Now that I think about it, The Mic input is right by the camera light, that can't be a good thing.![]()
not wanting to start the old arguments with Alex its interesting to find he has bought a camcorder since he has spent years taking little digs at them at every chance.
But back to the topic at hand... Ive noticed that Sony has been stripping down the features on the D8 cameras for the last couple of years. It used to be a case that one of the advantages of a D8 camera was that you could get all the features like Analogue inputs, and mic and headphone with similar picture quality of a camera a 3rd more expensive with the trade off being its more bulky. But now with Sony taking all the features away it seems they are now marketing them as cheap alternatives to DV rather a direct comparison.

Also, I would appreciate it if people would kindly refrain from commenting about the lack of XLR jacks on the Digital8 cameras as well.![]()
Thank you.
"Little digs" is not the correct term.
I've taken specific digs. I've complained that some small digital cameras produce too much motor noise which contaminates the camera microphone, some don't offer mic inputs, no XLR's, the mini-dv tape is not archival, there is no settable time-code option, and some don't have a headphone jack option. All legitimate and quite specific digs.
My further complaint was that people who don't understand why the above specific complaints mattered and simply focused on the fact that the cameras were digital and the rest seemed to be irrelevant.

When i talk about digs its the petty stupid ones you have done, like when you said something to the effect of... "as a beginer what can i learn with a digital camera? How to screw in filters?".
I don't think I said that.
